Italy has named Roberto Mancini as the new coach of their national team, the country's football federation (FIGC) said in a statement on their website on Monday.

The FIGC said Mancini would officially be presented at the team's headquarters in Florence on Tuesday. He replaces Gian Piero Ventura who was fired in November after they failed to qualify for the World Cup.

The 53-year-old was previously coach of Russian club Zenit St Petersburg and was released from his contract on Sunday. He has also coached Fiorentina, Lazio, Inter Milan, Manchester City and Galatasaray.

His first match in charge will be a friendly against Saudi Arabia in Switzerland on May 28.
